Coven Badges
A symbol of specialization that locks a witch's soul into one magical path.
Coven Badges are magical artifacts worn by citizens of the Boiling Isles to designate their specific area of magical specialization and enforce the Emperor's Coven system. Issued by the Emperor's authority, these badges channel a user's innate magic into a single approved discipline while simultaneously suppressing all other forms of spellcasting. They serve as both a professional license and a tool of social control, dictating an individual's role in society based on their assigned talent.

Lore & Background
The badges act as a magical filter, amplifying the chosen discipline while actively blocking access to any other form of magic. A witch who wears an Abomination badge cannot cast fire spells, even if they possess that talent naturally. Refusal to join a coven or attempting to practice unapproved magic results in severe punishment, including exile or imprisonment. This rigid structure creates a society where versatility is forbidden, and a witch's entire identity becomes defined by their badge.
In Their Own Story
Luz watched as the young witch trembled, her hand hovering over the glowing orb of the Abomination Coven. The badge, a jagged stone set in dark metal, hummed with a low, oppressive vibration that seemed to silence the very air around them. As the Elder pressed it onto the girl's chest, the ambient magic of the forest—wild vines and floating sparks—suddenly vanished from her reach, leaving only the cold, heavy power of clay and slime. The girl gasped, not in triumph, but in loss, as a thousand other possibilities were sealed away behind the stone.
Reader's Guide
Coven Badges function by creating a magical resonance with the wearer's specific talent while acting as a dampener for all others. Visually, each badge is unique to its coven, often crafted from materials related to their magic, such as glass for Illusion or bone for Abomination, and worn prominently on the chest. Mechanically, once activated, the badge forces the user's spellcasting through a narrow channel. If a witch attempts to cast a spell outside their designated field, the magic fails completely or backfires violently. This limitation is absolute; even powerful witches cannot bypass it without removing the badge or breaking its enchantment. The badges are worn by all active coven members and serve as a visual indicator of status in Boiling Isles society. They can be forcibly removed to free a witch, but doing so often leaves them temporarily unable to cast any magic until their natural balance is restored. The destruction of the Coven system rendered these artifacts useless, returning freedom of choice to the witches.
